You should learn how to download movies using torrents by yourself.

If you’re old enough to use a browser you should learn how to search for movies, download them with subtitles and watch them.

This is for several reasons:

  1. Copyright is rubbish.
  2. It will give you independence and set you on the protestant path of agency.
  3. It will make you understand the power that fiddling with things by yourself has.
  4. Netflix, news, facebook and traditional TV steal your attention making you into a zombie by way of convenience.
  5. If you are a girl or a woman, depending on the year and location you’re reading this, it might even be a feminist act.

You might find yourself tempted to settle for “watch online”. You should not. This is choosing mediocrity. You want to be in control, be able to click pause, be able to save the movie for later usage. Be able to screen it wherever you please, without pop ups, in high quality. You should be able to pick subtitles in your own language.

To download a movie by torrent there are 2 steps.

  1. Find and download a magnet link for the movie you are after.
  2. Use the magnet link with a torrent client, which is a software that actually downloads the file from many other people to your computer.

What is a magnet link?

A magnet link is a unique id for a file. It is an id that is verifiable, so given that you have the file, you can actually verify it exactly matches the id. So it’s like a unique fingerprint. This is important because it means that when you actually get the file, your program knows it’s exactly that file and not some virus. This is what makes downloading through torrents safe. Of course this is assuming that you actually have the correct magnet link at hand.

How to find a magnet link for the movie you’re after

Use a torrent search engine, like thepiratebay (there are many copies of this website, because it is attacked frequently, you can use google to find a copy, or go to “the proxy bay” (again from google), a website that has links to a bunch of them). Torrent search engines are websites that given the name of the movie, show you a bunch of possible magnet links. You can then use the amount of seeders (people who hold this file currently) and leechers (people who are downloading this file from others at the moment) to pick the right magnet link (if many people have it, it means it’s probably what you are after). Usually the magnet link has a sign of a magnet on it.

Avoid clicking banners, big shiny buttons, or allowing any permissions you are asked for.

Only open files that have a movie suffix (e.g. .mkv, .avi, .mp4), never anything with .exe suffix (likely to be a virus).

Once you have the magnet link, you should use a torrent client (e.g. “transmission”), and you give this program your magnet link. This program then goes around and looks for people who have this file exactly, and downloads it from them. If many people have it, it will be downloaded fast.

There you have it, your very own high quality copy of the movie you actually wanted to see.
